Altavista’s business community is a robust mix of “mom & pop” stores, regional and national chains, and large corporations. We have several major banking institutions, a thriving downtown retail district, an eclectic group of restaurants from local taste to foreign style, auto dealerships and repair centers, shopping centers, furniture stores, major super markets, and more.
Major manufacturing continues to play a big part in the economy of our town. Major employers include textile manufacturing, construction services, printing services, bearing manufacturing, baby formula manufacturing, tire valve manufacturing, transportation services, and conveyor system manufacturing. Industries are attracted by our high quality of life, low taxes, low utility rates, and the dedication and work ethic of our labor force. Altavista also offers a major highway (US 29) linking it with Greensboro, NC and Lynchburg, VA. Plus, we have two rail lines operated by Norfolk Southern.
