Scarecrow Stroll

In 2009, Altavista On Track sponsored the First Annual Scarecrow Stroll.  This event takes place in October and invites local civic organizations, churches, businesses and families to participate in creating a scarecrow to adorn the streets.  In it's first year, we welcomed nearly 40 scarecrows to Downtown Altavitsta.  Vistiors came from near and far to stroll downtown and see the unique sights!  All are welcome to join in the fun, show their creativity and maybe win a prize!  For 2011's 3rd Annual Scarecrow Stroll, click on the following links:           2011 Entry Form

Uncle Billy's Day Festival

An annual celebration held the first full weekend in June, Uncle Billy’s Day commemorates the founding of the First Saturday Trade Lot by the late William G. “Uncle Billy” Lane, Sr. The celebration itself dates back to 1949. Organized by the Altavista Volunteer Fire Company, local civic and nonprofit groups  and hard-working community volunteers, the two-day festival includes live music, crafts, games, children’s entertainment, food, and fireworks. Also included are art, automobile, and photography shows. This event originally was held at the First Saturday Trade Lot, and while Uncle Billy’s Day still is held in conjunction with the First Saturday Trade Lot activities, many of the activities in recent years have expanded to the English Park and downtown central business district. First Saturday Trade Lot

The First Saturday Trade Lot traces its roots almost to the founding of Altavista. Established in 1916 and traditionally held the first Saturday of every month, this Trade Lot, located at the intersection of Pittsylvania Avenue and 7th Street, attracts traders and shoppers from a multi-state area.  The popularity of the event has increased to a level such that this is now a two-day event – operating both the first Friday and first Saturday of each month. Proceeds benefit the Altavista High School Band Boosters and the coordinators of each market.

Altavista Farmers’ Market

The Farmers’ Market was started in 2001 at the Trade Lot to provide an outlet for citizens to obtain fresh fruits and vegetables, and for area farmers to sell their crops. It is open on a regular basis two days per week during the growing season, although one can often find growers selling their products all during the week during peak seasons.

Harvest Jubilee and Wine Festival

This annual festival is hosted by Avoca, the principal architectural landmark of the Town of Altavista, an American Queen Anne-style house built in 1901, and the home site of Revolutionary Patriot Colonel Charles Lynch. Many different vineyards are represented at this festival. Visitors experience wines from all around the state. The festival also includes live music and games for children. Jimmy's Cafe

The scene depicted in this print is from approximately 1947/48 taken on Main Street in Altavista, VA. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Thomas (Mary Driskill), opened their first restaurant in 1929/30 at 814 Main Street, then sold it to Mickey James in 1931, due to the depression. The couple moved to Washington, D.C., where Mr. Thomas became a bus driver. The family moved back to Altavista in 1945 and opened "Jimmy's Cafe" in the building presently housing "The General Store and Inn", seen in this print. At one point in 1950 for 30 to 60 days, the owners also fed the National Guardsmen. In 1965, the owners built a new restaurant directly across the street from this one. One year after it was built, a cafeteria was constructed in the lower level. During this time, for eight years, the Thomas' also served around 14,500 meals to passengers at the Southern Station. From 1967 - 1972, chaperoned dances for teenagers were held in the lower level each Saturday, with as many as 475 in attendance each Saturday evening. There were as many as thirty employees at the peak of the business, with one working from the second week of the opening to its closing in June 1975.
